Washington Returns From the War to His Mount Vernon Home

After resigning his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in Annapolis on December 23rd and attending a dance in his honor, George Washington rode home to Mount Vernon, arriving in time for Christmas dinner as illustrated in this painting by John Buxton entitled “He Returns Victorious.”
